Figure Review - Revoltech Yamaguchi Evangelion Mark .09

"EVA Unit Zero?"
-Shinji Ikari, Evangelion 3.33 You Can (Not Redo)

The origins of Evangelion Mark .09 are shrouded in mystery. All that is known is that it is a Vessel of Adams and highly resembles the former Evangelion Unit 00, which was destroyed by the 10th Angel, Zeruel, in the climax of Evangelion 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance. The Mark .09 belongs to Rei Ayanami and uses it to retrieve the now awakened Shinji Ikari from the AAA Wunder and bring him back to the shambled ruins of NERV headquarters.

Continuing their line of Evangelion figures from the third film in the Rebuild of Evangelion series, Revoltech released the Evangelion Mark .09 in mid-September. The figure is another brand new sculpt, slightly different from August's Evangelion Unit 02 Gamma. It looks to be an upgraded version of the typical NERV Evangelion design as opposed to the radical upgraded designs of WILLE's Unit 02 and Unit 08.

The articulation on the Mark .09 remains much the same as EVA 13 and Unit 02 Gamma. Unlike figures for Evangelion Unit 00, the Mark .09's head is different. One major difference between the Mark .09 and Unit 00 is that the eye is able to freely move around. The figure successfully manages to replicate that 'creepy' feature of this EVA with a fully articulated eyeball that you can move around in all possible angles.

Along with several pairs of option hands and a tripod stand to attach to the base of the figure's back (much like the previous Revoltech Evangelion Unit 02 Gamma), The Mark .09 comes with an alternate neck piece with a stub where its head used to be. The Mark .09 loses its head early on in the movie when Unit 08 shoots it off during its escape from the AAA Wunder.

Along with its neck stub, the figure also comes with Mark .09's frightening looking scythe, which it uses in battle against Unit 02 and Unit 08 during the climax of Evangelion 3.0

Finally, it comes with a base of giant skulls, as seen in Central Dogma. This is the first Evangelion figure from Revoltech to come with such a base. It is compatible with some of the other Evangelion figures from the line.

All in all, Revoltech's Evangelion Mark .09 is another fine addition to their line of figures from Evangelion 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo. As I've stated in my review for Unit 02 Gamma, Revoltech seems to be improving their figures with each new release. It's quite an awesome figure. I display it with the base as seen in the second picture above. I look forward to this month's Evangelion Unit 08 Beta figure!
