Original Figure Review - NECA Classic Godzilla Series - Godzilla 1954

"Let us call this creature, Godzilla. Named after the legend of Odo Island."

And we are back with our first written review in MONTHS! I was originally supposed to do this review (in video format) back in September, but I ended up being busy with other things. However, even as time passed on, I was still keen on reviewing this figure. So without further ado, let us take a look at NECA's Classic Godzilla Series Godzilla 1954 action figure!

X-Plus/DeAgostini Godzilla 1954 Statue Coming May 2016

DeAgostini is releasing a brand new X-Plus exclusive: Godzilla 1954 "Train in Mouth" Monochrome Version vinyl figure. Check it out here.

This is a stylized version of the original 1954 Godzilla during one of the film's iconic moments where he grabs a train in his mouth. The detailing looks absolutely amazing and shows off the original Godzilla more fiercely than ever! It is primarily sculpted in PVC, which will make it a lot more sturdier and solid than most X-Plus figures.

I am personally aiming on adding this piece to my collection! It looks amazing and another Godzilla 1954 in my display can't hurt.

Preorders for this figure/statue are being capped on February 8, 2016 at DeAgostini's website.

Steven's Toy Reviews - How to Identify a Nendoroid Red Bootleg

Recently I collaborated with good friend, Steven McCarthy with his video comparing the differences between the legit and bootleg versions of the Nendroid Red action figure. I bought the bootleg a while back. I do not condone the purchase of bootlegs, but Red was one that I was curious about. Check out Steven's video showing off how to identify the bootleg:

Steven Reviews NECA's Godzilla 1954

Our friend Steven reviews NECA's recently released Godzilla 1954 action figure!

SHIN GOJIRA (2016) Cast Announced!

"Shin Gojira," is the official title for the 2016 film.

Thanks to Gormaru Island on Facebook, we have a look at Toho's recently announced cast for Shinji Higuchi and Hideaki Anno's "Shin Gojira," which comes out Summer 2016 in Japan.

From left to right: Hiroki Hasegawa, Yutaka Takenouchi, and Satomi Ishihara
The cast for the officially titled Shin Gojira include: Hiroki Hasegawa (Shikishima from Shinji Higuchi's Attack on Titan Parts 1 & 2) as the film's male lead, Yutaka Takenouchi as a character linked with the Japanese government, and Satomi Ishihara (Hange Zoe from Higuchi's Attack on Titan Parts 1 & 2) as the film's female lead, an agent for the United States.

According to Gormaru Island, Toho shed some light regarding the plot:

The story takes place in modern day Japan that is attacked, and the United States are involved within the chaos.

The inclusion of the United States into the story may be a way of attracting Western appeal for the film, ultimately leading it to a [limited?] theatrical release in the US much like Higuchi's live action Attack of Titan films.

I am personally really looking forward to seeing Shin Gojira as its director and cast promises it to be one of the strongest entries in the franchise. The film will utilize a hybrid method of practical and CG effects, a technique that had rarely been utilized in Japanese films. If it's anything remotely similar to Higuchi's work on Attack on Titan (2015,) then count me excited!

Funko unveils Godzilla POP! Vinyl Figure

Rejoice collectors! Funko finally unveils their anticipated POP! Movies Godzilla vinyl figure at a Gamestop convention in Las Vegas. The figure is slated for a November 3rd release date (how fitting!)

Up until Funko's unveil, I was assuming that the POP! figure would be based on the 2014 design. I am quite grateful that it turned out to be the classic Toho Godzilla instead, which hopefully opens up the possibility for other characters to accompany it in the future such as Mothra, Rodan, Gigan, Jet Jaguar, MechaGodzilla, King Ghidorah and etc.

UPDATE:

Apparently there will be three variants of the POP! Godzilla figure: a standard green colored version, a GameStop exclusive gray version, and another version with blue colored spines.

We'll update again when we have confirmation.

Upcoming Videos!

Now that I have uploaded my first review video onto our Youtube channel I plan to continue on a weekly basis (with one video per week,) hopefully, depending on what items I have yet to review or what I have coming in. So far, I have quite a bit to cover:

- X-Plus Toho Large Monsters Series Gorosaurus 1968 (RIC Boy reissue/repaint)
- X-Plus Toho 30cm Series Yuji Sakai Modeling Collection Godzilla 1991 Hokkaido Landing Ver.
- NECA Classic Godzilla Series - Godzilla 1954
- X-Plus Toho Large Monsters Series Godzilla 1995
- Sideshow Collectibles Knifehead Statue

So yeah, that's what I have planned thus far. Am I abandoning my traditional write-up reviews? Not quite just yet. I'll only write up a review if I am unable to do a video for reasons beyond my control. My intent is to gradually switch to doing my reviews exclusively on video.

Sideshow Collectibles Godzilla Maquette Product Review + Extra Thoughts

Well, here it is folks! Our first in a hopefully long series of review videos. Today we focus on the highly anticipated Sideshow Collectibles Godzilla Maquette, released back in July. Watch our video to get a closer look at this humongous statue.

NEW 14-inch tall Godzilla Statue from Sideshow Collectibles

Initially unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this summer, Sideshow Collectibles' new 14-inch tall Godzilla statue will be available to preorder next Thursday, September 3rd. Check out their website for more details!

Personally, I am loving how this new smaller statue looks. I always saw the 2ft tall Maquette as an art piece, or something reminiscent of a production piece from the film. The statue, however, is more worthy as a movie replica of the character. Not sure how much it costs yet - though I'm certain it'll be a few hundred dollars cheaper than the Maquette, - but I am intending on getting it!

Original Figure Review - NECA 12" Head-to-Tail Godzilla [Classic Video Game Appearance]

Written by Arlo Hansen

We asked for it, and we - ahem - somewhat got it. It's the classic video game appearance of the Big G from the 1990 NES game, Godzilla: Monster of Monsters. Never did we think we that we'd ever get a video game version of Godzilla, period. However, given that NECA had the Godzilla license and were also doing a popular series of video game styled figures, it was somewhat inevitable that we'd get one for Godzilla. The "downside" of this, however, is that the figure is not of the 1964 Godzilla of which the original game sprite was based off of, but instead a rehashed and retooled version of NECA's existing Godzilla 1985 figure. How does that affect my judgement for this figure? Read on ahead to find out!

Original Figure Review - NECA Pacific Rim Ultra Deluxe Action Figure, Kaiju Otachi [Flying Ver.]

Written by Arlo Hansen

After the release of the regular "land" Otachi earlier this year, rumors and speculation immediately spread in regards to the release of an eventual "flying" version of the fan-favorite Category-4 Kaiju. Ultimately our speculations were confirmed when NECA unveiled the Ultra Deluxe Flying Otachi, slated for a July 2015 release.

This representation of Otachi is of its flying form, seen during her battle with Gipsy Danger in (technically above) Hong Kong. Does this version of Otachi live up to my gleaming opinions about the first figure? Let's see...

Original Figure Review - NECA Pacific Rim 7-inch Figure Series, Jaeger Series 06, Horizon Brave

Written by Arlo Hansen

Following in the footsteps of Jaegers such as Tacit Ronin and Romeo Blue, the next addition to NECA's Pacific Rim Jaeger action figure collection is none other than Horizon Brave. While only featured in the prologue sequence of the 2013 giant monster vs. giant robot action film, Pacific Rim, as well as on the cover of the prequel graphic novel, Pacific Rim: Tales from Year Zero, battling the Kaiju, Meathead, Horizon Brave is quite an interesting Jaeger with an impressive background covered in the official novelization of the film...

Horizon Brave is a Mark 1 Chinese Jaeger, constructed and launched on December 22, 2015. It has fought battles alongside other notable Jaegers such as Romeo Blue, Tacit Ronin and Coyote Tango. Horizon Brave was piloted by Lo Hin Shen and Xichi Po. In 2019 it accompanied Jaegers, Gipsy Danger (piloted by the Becket brothers,) and Lucky Seven (co-piloted by eventual Striker Eureka co-pilot, Hercules Hansen, and his brother, Scott Hansen) in battle a against a Category IV Kaiju in Manila, Philippines. It ended its many years of service with its destruction during a battle against a Kaiju in Lima (the destroyed Jaeger is briefly seen in the film.)

So, does this figure show any promise and stand up alongside its fellow Jaeger compatriots? Let us take a look...

Original Figure Review - S.H. MonsterArts Godzilla 2000 Millennium Special Color Ver.

Written by Arlo Hansen

Once again, Bandai Tamashii Nations provides us, collectors, with yet another repaint of a past release. This time it is of the S.H. MonsterArts Godzilla 2000 Millennium, which was originally released back in December 2013/January 2014. With this particular repaint, Godzilla 2000 is featured in a more traditional color scheme instead of the original dark green skin and dark violet dorsal plates. How does this compare to the original? Let us find out together!

The Kaiju Planet is Returning to YouTube!

Heads up, peeps!

The Kaiju Planet is returning to YouTube! Hopefully sometime later this month or even in early September, after I get settled into my new home in Manila, I will be conducting a brand new series of video reviews for select figures. Following in the footsteps of our friends and fellow reviewers such as Rich Eso (Fresh Vinyl Reviews,) Steven McCarthy(Steven's Toy Reviews,) and James Hale (DiegoDoom,) I feel ready to step back into the limelight and embarrass myself in front of the camera while reviewing the latest and greatest figures of our favorite rubber suited monsters!

Even though I have nothing of interest currently uploaded to my channel, it is currently live. So, please subscribe! Be sure to keep an eye out for my videos when they begin to pop up. If you don't catch them on YouTube, don't worry, I will be sharing them through the blog and on Facebook.

As of now, I plan on doing video reviews for the following figures: X-Plus Toho Large Monsters Series Gorosaurus 1968 (RIC Boy Exclusive,) X-Plus Toho 30cm Series Yuji Sakai Modeling Collection Godzilla 1991 [Hokkaido Landing Ver.], X-Plus Toho 30cm Series Godzilla 2014 (RIC Boy Exclusive w/ Male MUTO,) NECA Pacific Rim 18" Figure Series Striker Eureka, and the Sideshow Collectibles Godzilla Maquette.

There are some figures I left out of the mix (if you've noticed the upcoming reviews tab on the right side of the blog.) Those will still be covered in written reviews.

Hail To The King: 60 Years of Destruction

Better late than never.

Kyle Yount, host of the popular podcast, KaijuCast,  hosts this hour long documentary celebrating 60 years of Godzilla.

In 2014, kaiju fan and podcaster Kyle Yount traveled to Japan to determine the King of the Monsters' impact within his own country. HAIL TO THE KING: 60 YEARS OF DESTRUCTION follows the host of the Kaijucast throughout his visit to the birthplace of Godzilla during the 60th anniversary celebration.

In my opinion, this is a very solid documentary that reflects how the Japanese perceive Godzilla and the future of the art of tokusatsu in Japanese cinema. Kyle does a fantastic job hosting this documentary, and manages to tap into the opinions of fans, filmmakers, and veteran Godzilla actors alike.

In the void of any special treatment for the monster king for his 60th anniversary, I applaud Kyle and his many supporters for making this documentary a reality.

X-Plus Gigantic Series Yuji Sakai Godzilla 1999 and Large Monsters Series Legion

Summer Wonderfest 2015 is underway in Japan right now, and the guys at X-Plus have unveiled a couple of nifty figures for us Kaiju collectors!

First is the next addition to the Yuji Sakai Modeling Collection, Godzilla 1999. Unlike the first two additions to the line, Godzilla 1999 will be released in the Gigantic Series as opposed to the Toho 30cm Series due to the design being based on Shinji Nishikawa's early, and quite popular, concept design for the creature for Godzilla 2000: Millennium. It's expected to be around 400mm tall (40cm or 15in,) and will be released sometime towards late September. No price has been announced yet. It's worthy to note that the figure displayed at X-Plus' booth has brightly colored orange spines while the one at Yuji Sakai's booth is colored normally. It's speculated that the Gigantic Sakai Godzilla 1999 with the orange spines will be the RIC Boy exclusive. More on that when details become available.

Secondly is the utterly massive Large Monsters Series Legion in all her glory! Compared to the Large Monsters Series Gamera 1996, Legion absolutely dwarfs it. Based on the display card next to the figure, Legion is set to release in December, and will be packed with Gamera 1996 as a set for the online RIC Boy exclusive.

Other than that, the Toho Large Monsters Series Godzilla 1995 was also shown as well. Its release date was recently pushed back to sometime later in August or early September.

SPECIAL EARLY-BIRD REVIEW - S.H. MonsterArts Godzilla (2014) Spit Fire Ver.

Written by Arlo Hansen

I admit, 2015 has been quite a slow and boring year for the S.H. MonsterArts figure line from Bandai Tamashii Nations. Other than Gamera 1996 and Mecha King Ghidorah, every other figure released so far has been a repaint such as Godzilla 2000 Millennium Special Color Ver. as well as the upcoming Godzilla 1964 Appearance Ver. in October/November and the recently announced King Ghidorah Special Color Ver. coming out in December/January. However, as much as collectors have complained, I for one see merit in some of these repaints. Godzilla 2000 Millennium, Godzilla 1964, and King Ghidorah have been BIG sellers when they first came out, and now their after-market prices have reached sky high. These repaints allow new collectors to acquire these particular sculpts without harming the value of the originals. Many have complained about this fact, but I personally don't mind it.

When Bandai first announced Godzilla (2014) Spit Fire Ver. I was particularly skeptical of it. Both the original S.H. MonsterArts Godzilla (2014) and the Poster Image Ver. had alarming quality issue errors that angered many fans and collectors. Even right when I got the figure, I was unsure whether or not this figure would possess the same errors or not.

Is the S.H. MonsterArts Godzilla (2014) Spit Fire Ver. a worthy figure to have in your collection? Let us take a closer look at this figure!

Wednesday 15 July 2015

S.H. MonsterArts King Ghidorah (Special Color Ver.) Coming Out December 2015!

Heads up, fellow collectors!

Bandai Tamashii Nations is unleashing the king of terror once again this holiday season! The S.H. MonsterArts King Ghidorah is making a comeback in a more vibrant gold coloration (to match with the shade of gold used for their figure of Mecha King Ghidorah,) and packed with some neat accessories including the KIDS time machine, different colored beam effects that mimic the original poster art for Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991,) and a special display stand to showcase King Ghidorah in a flying pose.

The figure is slated to release in December 2015 in Japan, and then will be brought over to North America in January 2016. It's currently priced at 14,904 Japanese Yen (approximately $120 USD.)

On a personal note; while I do own the original release, which does have a duller shade of gold, I will be getting this variant. It's a lot more vibrant and certainly will stand out more on the shelf, especially with that awesome flight stand!

NECA Ultimate Striker Eureka & Deluxe Mutavore coming November 2015

ULTIMATE STRIKER EUREKA - NOVEMBER 2015

"From the sci-fi movie Pacific Rim, we present the definitive collector’s version of Striker Eureka!

The towering mech from Down Under gets the “Ultimate” treatment, with an all-new body and new articulation. Its open chest of rockets is actually an interchangeable piece that swaps out to show a fiery missile launch! There’s even a nuclear payload that attaches to the back of the figure.

The 7” scale Australian mech is made from the actual digital files utilized by ILM in the creation of Pacific Rim for exacting accuracy and detail. Comes in collector-friendly deluxe window box packaging with opening flap."

MUTAVORE - NOVEMBER 2015

"From the epic Pacific Rim movie, our newest boxed, ultra-deluxe kaiju action figure is Mutavore!
Just when the world thought that the alien invasion was over, this Category IV kaiju emerged from the breach and easily broke through Sydney’s Anti-Kaiju Wall. At over 8” tall and over 6” wide, Mutavore is massive – larger than the previously released Trespasser, Scunner and Knifehead! This movie-accurate figure utilizes 100% new tooling, features over 30 points of articulation, and is to scale with our Jaeger action figures."

Both figures are now available for preorder at BigBadToyStore!

NEW Godzilla Statues from Sideshow Collectibles and Mondo

With Sideshow Collectible's massive two-foot tall Godzilla Maquette releasing very soon, they go ahead and unveil ANOTHER Godzilla statue at San Diego Comic-Con. This one appears to be in a smaller scale than the maquette and has more of an artistic edge this time around. I think it looks pretty rad and fierce! Really considering on getting it when preorders pop up.

On the other end of the spectrum, Mondo is releasing their own unique Godzilla statue based on the teaser poster art they did for SDCC 2013. No word yet on price nor size, but preorders are said to open up sometime in the Fall. Like the new Sideshow statue above, I am keen on getting this one too!

NEW Pacific Rim Kaiju & Jaegers Revealed!

Ah, San Diego Comic-Con has come once again.

You know what that means... New figure reveals! This year, NECA did not disappoint with two new additions to their Kaiju and Jaeger lines - Hardship and Mutavore for the Kaiju, and Battle at the Docks Gipsy Danger and Ultimate Striker Eureka for the Jaegers. Along with them include Flying Otachi, Anteverse Gipsy Danger, and Baby Otachi.

All of them look AMAZING. Ultimate Striker Eureka is expected to come out by the end of the year. No date has been set for the two new Kaiju, but I am assuming one would release before the end of the year while the other comes out early next year.
