Figure Review - X-Plus Toho 30cm Series Space Godzilla

First things first... Happy Thanksgiving, fellow Kaiju Fans!

This year we have much to be thankful for as collectors, and I am extremely thankful towards X-Plus for creating super awesome, and super detailed, figures of all of our favorite giant monsters. Now, it may not be a big fat meaty turkey, but here we have a true behemoth in all sense of the word. This is the X-Plus Toho 30cm Series Space Godzilla from Toho's 1994 film, Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla!

I must be honest, when this figure was first announced I had no intention on actually getting it. The reason as to why I thought that was because I believed the figure to be inaccurately portraying the character. To me, the thighs looked incredibly large, the tail too short, and the shoulder crystals to stubby. But, thanks to my pal, John Stanowski at Kaiju Addicts for his review on the 30cm Space Godzilla it made me rethink my outlook on this figure. Then I thought, "Actually it may look a lot more like its film counterpart that I originally thought."

And just like that, I ordered this beast of a figure. One of the last ones in stock at Hobby Search.

When I say, "beast of a figure," I am not exaggerating. The X-Plus 30cm Space Godzilla is a BIG figure! It stands well above 13 inches, pretty much dwarfing both the 25cm figures and many of its fellow 30cm figures. The detailing on Space Godzilla is also pretty amazing as well. That was actually one of the things I was concerned about with this particular figure. When I saw the promotional images of the prototype, I did not find it very detailed and pretty bland.

However, once you get the chance to hold this big guy in your hands and look at the sculpt all over, then you will see that there is a great amount of detail that went into this figure. The overall sculpt is pretty spot. It took me a while to point out the accuracies and inaccuracies between the figure and the actual suit. The overall bulk is correct, but the snout could have been a tad more narrower and longer. Other than that, everything else seems to be in check.

As mentioned above, Space Godzilla is a behemoth of a figure. The photo above expresses the size differences between August's 25cm Baragon 1965 figure.  I currently do not have any other 30cm figures on hand right now (currently away from my home on Guam at the moment,) but I assure you guys that this will even tower over the 30cm Godzilla 1989 and certainly over the 30cm Godzilla 2004 and 1984. The only other figures that may match it in height are the 30cm Godzilla 1954 and 30cm Hedorah 1971.

Out of everything, and this was also expressed by John at Kaiju Addicts in his review, that the face is perhaps one of the most impressive aspects about this figure. The teeth are individually sculpted and painted, the overall expression just shows pure terror and ferocity. What I appreciate most are the eyes themselves. If you look at them under the right lighting, the eyes seem to glow with a blood shot red as in the movie.

So what are my final thoughts on this figure? Well where do I start... I am so glad that I go this! I had intended to cut myself off from X-Plus' 30cm line after the 30cm Godzilla 2004 earlier this summer, however, I was thwarted back into the habit with the 30cm Space Godzilla and eventually the upcoming 30cm Godzilla 1999, Gamera 1999, and Gigan 2004. The 30cm Space Godzilla is a great figure. Sure it may not be from the most popular of the Godzilla films, but it is a faithful representation of the character and a true centerpiece to any 30cm X-Plus figure collection.

If you're a fan of the Heisei series, then this figure's a must have. However, if you feel that you can live without it, then it's figure that you can easily pass on. As an X-Plus collector, I am truly happy I got it. I must thank John Stanowski and his great review for changing my mind on Space Godzilla.

To close, I once again wish each and every single one of you a Happy Thanksgiving.

... And go nuts on Black Friday!
