And now onto our final review for NECA's first wave of Pacific Rim figures, Knifehead!
Knifehead is one of the giant monsters, Kaiju, that have been sent to our world to eradicate humankind. Even though the movie is not out yet, Knifehead was seen in various trailers battling the Jaeger, Gipsy Danger.
From the tip of its knife-like protrusion on its head to toe, Knifehead stands close to six to seven inches. It is slightly smaller than the Jaeger figures. NECA has a tendency to scale their figures accurately to their movie counterparts, but in Knifehead's case, it is noted that the trailers show it being just as big or bigger than Gypsy Danger. I could be wrong about this though.
From the front, Knifehead looks like your typical kaiju. It is not much to look at this angle.
Knifehead really starts to impress when viewed from the side. In my opinion, Knifehead resembles Guiron from the Showa Gamera series.
From the back, you notice that Knifehead has a protective carapace on its upper and lower back.
Amongst Knifeheads multiple points of articulation, its jaw is able to close - only so slightly, then open as seen in the next picture below.
Other than the jaw, Knifehead has swivel joints in its shoulders and legs, and hinge joints in its knees and elbows. I found the articulation to be inferior when compared to the Jaeger figures. It's very basic, and it could have easily been a lot better.
The final point of articulation is the tail. Knifehead's tail is sculpted out of a soft rubber and has a wire inside that allows you to bend and pose it whatever way you want. This aspect is quite limited in my opinion.
Despite this figure possessing some really neat detail, and a pretty good sculpt, I was rather unimpressed. Don't get me wrong, I like this figure, but the articulation is pretty basic when compared to Gypsy Danger and Crimson Typhoon. Also, the possibility that this figure may be out of scale with the Jaegers may deter other collectors from buying Knifehead. Overall, I believe that this figure could have been a lot better. At this point I was much more impressed with the Jaegers than this guy. Once again, I still like him! But not as much as Gypsy and Crimson!
Enjoyed the review. I did not know there was some mouth movement. With all the advances in articulation science these days, you would think there would be better limb movements used on the figure, especially since they seemingly made it shorter than the Jaegers. I wonder what the future PR Kaiju will be like. Thanks for the honest review! :)
ReplyDeleteI don't believe that Knifehead was out of scale with the Jaegers. It was a Category 3 Kaiju and big for one. When you see it approaching Gipsy Danger it is swimming and its rear legs are most likely off the sea surface during the battle (it floats off when Gipsy smashes its head).
