Once I removed the figure's box from the Amazon.com packaging, I was disappointed to see that the corners have been dented. Whoever packed this box did not do it carefully enough since there was hardly any padding inside the packaging. That garnered Amazon a slightly negative review from me. However, the rest of the box was a-ok, and the figure intact.
Eva Unit 01 is my second Robot Damashii figure, the first being the Nirvash Type ZERO spec2, which I bought last summer. This figure is absolutely loaded with accessories! We have an assorted set of alternate hands, a pair of prog knives, a couple of rifles, an umbilical cable, a pair of extra horns, the berserker head, and the infamous AT Field accessory (with stand).
Once I took the figure out of its packaging and put on the relaxed open hands, I took some time to admire the detailing on this figure. It is the most movie accurate Evangelion figure that I have ever seen and perhaps own. This blows anything that Revoltech has done out of the water. The detail is that great. One would think it hopped right out of the screen.
In regards to height, the Robot Damashii Eva 01 is quite taller than any other figure in its respective line. It stands as tall as a typical Ultra-Act figure. When scaled next to a Revoltech Eva figure such as the pictured Revoltech EvaEvo Evangelion Mark .06, the Robot Damashii figure looks to be about the same height. Do not be fooled though. In person, the Robot Damashii Eva 01 is a few inches taller and make the Revoltech Evas look anorexic.
The articulation on this figure is far superior to the Revoltech Evas. There are certain poses with this figure that are complicated or impossible to do with the Revoltech figures such as the pose above, replicating the scene where Eva 01 prepares to sprint to intercept the 8th Angel from Evangelion 2.22: You Can (Not) Advance.
The prog knives, umbilical cable, and rifles are typical accessories that any Evangelion figure should be accompanied with no matter what company releases the figures. In terms of accessories, they pretty much match the quality of the accessories one would find with any Revoltech branded Evangelion figure.
What I found most interesting and positive about this figure that differentiates it even more from the Revoltech Evas is that Tamashii Nations put detailing on the bottom of its feet. Normally, Revoltech's Evangelions have a solid orange coloring on the bottom of their feet, but Tamashii's Robot Damashii Evangelion figures have them detailed for absolute movie accuracy.
Finally, the berserker! No figure of Eva 01 is complete without its berserker head! The Robot Damashii figure perfectly replicates the ferocity of Eva 01's berserker mode in the alternate head sculpt. However, the one thing that differentiates it from the Revoltech EvaEvo Unit 01 is that its right eye is not busted. The latter though was going for a more direct movie reference while this figure wasn't.
Now, my favorite accessory accompanied with this figure is indeed the AT Field. The AT Field is essentially a thin piece of translucent plastic that can be attached to a custom stand. Under the right lighting, the AT Field effect is absolutely fantastic. The only thing that would complete this display is if Tamashii Nations eventually released the fourth Angel, Sachiel, into the S.H. MonsterArts line (which they've been teasing us about for the last couple of years).
Overall, the Robot Damashii Evangelion Unit 01 is an absolutely great figure. I favor it now more than Revoltech's Evas. Don't get me wrong, as much as I love Revoltech's wide range of Evangelion releases, I find the Robot Damashii figure more movie accurate and fun to fiddle around with in regards to articulation and accessories. My ultimate rating for this figure is a full 5/5. It is that good. If you're a fan of Evangelion, I highly recommend this figure.
