Figure Review - Revoltech Yamaguchi Evangelion Unit 02 Gamma

Evangelion 3.33 You Can (Not) Redo [2012] featured some great changes to the Evangelion series as a whole. Amongst those changes was the upgrading of the popular Evangelion Unit 02 piloted by the fiery Asuka Shikinami.

The new Evangelion Unit 02 Gamma figure stands at around six inches tall. Unlike its predecessor, this figure has a bit of bulk to it. Similar to July's Evangelion 13 figure. It does not recycle any parts from the original Unit 02 figure. This figure is a completely brand new mold, and might I add, "Thank God!"

I am constantly impressed with Revoltech's newest Evangelion figures. Since the release of Unit 08 Alpha in June, they have been improving on the molds, sculpts, detail and overall articulation. The figure employs the same alternate hands as EVA 13. No longer do you need to utilize a separate joint to connect a hand part to the wrist. The peg is already on the hand and it's easy to slip into the socket.

Starting with this figure and onward, it seems that Revoltech is starting to include this peculiar tripod-like stand that connects to the base of the figure's back. This enables you to dynamically pose the figure without the use of a Revoltech stand. This is a great addition for the stands have their obvious limits.

One of the few accessories that is accompanied with this figure is Unit 02's Battle Spear, which is uses against Evangelion 13 and Evangelion Mark .09 during their battle in Central Dogma during the climax of Evangelion 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo.

The Battle Spear can separate into two separate swords that Unit 02 can wield.

EVA Unit 02 Gamma's final accessory is its alternate Machine Gun Arm. To replace the previous arm with this one, all you need to do is disconnect the arm below the shoulder and insert the Machine Gun Arm into the empty socket. If you're doing it for the first time, it is a little tight, but it'll loosen up over time.

Much of what I have to say about this figure is really positive. Revoltech is definitely on the right track in regards to taking their Evangelion figures to the next level. With that said, there is only one inconsistency with this figure compared to its on screen counterpart. The triangular symbol on its right shoulder should be turquoise in color, same as the bandanas that the WILLE personnel wear in the movie, instead of the former red and blue color scheme.

Other than that, this figure is just top notch! I highly recommend any EVA fan to purchase this figure. It's really good whether you like or hated Evangelion 3.0

  1. This figure looks pretty cool! The design's great too. I kinda wonder if they'll do one of the updated beast mode as well. That would be...something.
